Fifth Spirit Tarot
A 78-Card Deck for a Queer and Inclusive World
By Charlie Claire Burgess
Tarot has never fit neatly into a box. Neither should the people reading it.
Fifth Spirit Tarot is a vibrant, inclusive reimagining of the traditional tarot created by queer and nonbinary tarot reader, teacher, and writer Charlie Claire Burgess. Across 78 beautifully illustrated and hand-lettered cards, familiar archetypes are expanded beyond conventional ideas of gender, identity, and expression—creating a deck where more of us can see ourselves reflected in the cards.
At the heart of the deck is the idea of the fifth element: spirit. Earth, air, fire, and water exist within all of us, brought together by something deeper that transcends the categories we use to define ourselves. Fifth Spirit Tarot embraces that fluidity, inviting readers to approach the cards—and themselves—with greater curiosity and possibility.
Rather than replacing traditional gendered titles such as King and Queen, Burgess intentionally keeps them while challenging assumptions about who can embody those archetypes. Kings, Queens, Emperors, Empresses, and other familiar figures are represented through people of varied races, body types, abilities, ages, gender identities, and expressions, encouraging readers to explore the energy of an archetype without limiting who gets to inhabit it.
The result is a deck that feels both familiar and refreshingly expansive: rooted in tarot tradition while creating space for more nuanced, personal, and intuitive interpretations.
